How to use this course effectively
Follow these six steps and you will be fully prepared for your citizenship test:
1
Go through modules in order
Start with Module 1 and work through to Module 5 in sequence. Each module builds on the previous one. Do not skip ahead — the knowledge connects.
2
Read every lesson fully before taking the quiz
Each lesson contains the lesson content, a highlight box of commonly confused facts, and a Key Facts box. Read all three before clicking to the quiz. The Key Facts box is your most important study tool.
3
Memorize the Key Facts boxes
Every lesson ends with a blue Key Facts box. These contain the dates, names, and numbers most likely to appear on your real test. Write them out. Say them aloud. Revisit them before bed.
4
Take all three quiz sets per module
Each module has Quiz A (direct recall), Quiz B (application and scenarios), and Quiz C (challenge level). Do all three. Quiz B and C reflect the real test's style more closely than Quiz A alone.
5
Read every wrong answer explanation
When you get a question wrong, do not just note the correct answer and move on. Read the explanation carefully. Understanding why an answer is right — and why the others are wrong — is where real learning happens.
6
Complete all three mock exams under real conditions
Treat each mock exam as the real thing — 20 questions, 30 minutes, no notes, no breaks. If you score 15 or above (75%) consistently across all three mock exams, you are ready for your test.
Study tips that actually work
These strategies are proven to improve retention and help you pass first time:
📅
Study a little every day
30 minutes daily for two weeks beats 6 hours the night before. Spaced repetition — reviewing content across multiple days — dramatically improves long-term memory.
✍️
Write out key facts by hand
Writing dates, names, and numbers by hand (rather than typing) strengthens memory. Keep a small notebook for Key Facts — one page per module.
🗣️
Say it out loud
Reading content aloud — or explaining it to a family member or friend — activates different parts of your brain and improves recall significantly.
🔁
Retake quizzes you struggled with
If you score below 75% on any quiz set, revisit that lesson's Key Facts box and retake the quiz. Keep retaking until you consistently score 75% or above.
📖
Read Discover Canada alongside this course
This course is built from Discover Canada, but reading the official guide alongside it gives extra context. It is free to download from the IRCC website.
🎯
Focus extra time on Modules 1 and 2
History and Government are the most heavily tested areas. Spend more time on Modules 1 and 2 than on Modules 4 and 5. The weighting reflects the real test.
Do this. Avoid that.
Common mistakes that cause learners to struggle — and the habits that lead to success:

Cramming everything the night before

What to expect on test day
📍
Where: At an IRCC office or designated testing centre. You will receive instructions by mail when your test is scheduled.
🪪
What to bring: Your invitation letter from IRCC and valid government-issued photo identification. Do not bring notes or study materials.
📝
The format: 20 multiple-choice questions. 4 options per question. Only one correct answer. You have 30 minutes. Read each question carefully before answering.
✅
Passing: You need to answer at least 15 out of 20 questions correctly (75%) to pass. If you do not pass, you may be given a second chance through an interview with a citizenship officer.
🧘
Stay calm: If you have completed this course thoroughly, you are prepared. Take a breath, read each question twice, eliminate obviously wrong answers, and trust your preparation.
🗣️
Oral test option: If you have difficulty reading or writing, you can request an oral test administered by a citizenship officer instead of the written test.
